Our mission at Overland Skills Training is to provide a supportive environment for you to learn about the overland gear you already have. Bring your vehicle so we can look at it together, bring your camping gear, clothing and food. If you have tools or other equipment you would like advice or training on bring that too.
You drive to the meeting point, the start of the Mamquam FSR, at Highway 99 in Squamish. We then leave the parking lot as a group and drive about 14km to our campsite. Each vehicle will get a brief safety inspection and verification of license and insurance before we set off.
Yes, we offer customized courses, send an e-mail to info@overlandskillstraining.ca and we will work with you to design a course that works for you.
A weekend course is two nights camping, the learning starts on Friday night, with Trip Planning, Apps, Websites and How to find a Campsite. Saturday starts after breakfast with a look at every vehicle attending the event, learning, how to change a tire, how to plug a hole in a tire, how to check brake pads and hoses, Coolant, oil, ATF, Brake Fluid checks. A look at Dashboard Warning lights and what they mean. How to troubleshoot common vehicle issues. Saturday afternoon we do a bit of driving and discuss how to overcome a stuck vehicle and various recovery techniques and tools. That evening we chat a bit about food storage and cooking. Sunday morning we dive in to the world of Solar panels, lithium batteries, fuses and wiring, how do it properly and how to diagnose faults. Sunday afternoon, we do a short drive, discuss driving, planning and recovery along with vehicle set up options and how to build the right set up for your personal goals. The focus here is on the individual and that we don't have the same idea of what overland travel is, separating the social media advice with practical knowledge and real world tested solutions.
Sunday at 5:00 PM the course concludes and everyone heads their own way.
